Land Code

In July 2020, the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm membership ratified our own Land Code. Our land code gives us the authority to manage and make decisions regarding the development and use of our lands on-reserve, or on I.R. #1 and I.R. #2.

The federal government, under the First Nation Land Management Act, transferred to First Nations the right to enact a land code and manage and pass laws related to reserve lands.

kʷikʷəƛ̓əm now has the power to enact laws regarding the protection, development, use, possessions and management of our reserve lands and natural resources, and thereby honour our responsibility to preserve, protect, and enhance kʷikʷəƛ̓əm land, waters, resources, heritage, language and culture.

 

 

 

 

What is the Land Code's Purpose?

• REPLACES 44 sections (approximately one-third) of the land management sections of the Indian Act.
• REMOVES the Government of Canada from reserve land management.
• PROTECTS our lands from expropriation.
• PROTECTS our Cultural Heritage.
• PROTECTS our land base.
• PROVIDES more funding opportunities.
• SUPPORTS economic development.
• ALLOWS us to create by-laws regarding land usage.
• DOES NOT Impact reserve status of land.
• DOES NOT impact reserve Act Tax Exemption.
